Door games

Have you ever witnessed a Chinese tea ceremony? They're very fun. Meghan and Stanley are dear friends (I've known Meghan since the sixth grade!) and I was so excited to be able to capture their beautiful wedding traditions. Starting off with the door games. Traditionally, Meghan hides in the house somewhere and Stanley and his groomsmen are to navigate a series of challenges that the bridesmaids have put together. Each one is supposed to test Stanley's love for Meghan -- what is he willing to do in order to get to her? Meghan's bridesmaids came up with the silliest games, including:

  • roll a balloon up to their necks without using their hands
  • swing a hot dog into your math
  • bite the tip of some food (the one groomsman had to have it between his legs!!)
  • find Meghan's lip print (or do push ups!)

There are many different games that your wedding party can choose, but they're usually both humiliating and fun to watch. I've seen some couples make one partner and their friends eat a variety of foods (representing the different tastes: umami, sweet, sour, salty, and spicy); they could even make you sing a song in front of the whole neighborhood!

Following the completion of the door games, which also includes giving the bridesmaids lots of red envelopes for passage, Stanley walked into the house, found Meghan, and recited a poem in Cantonese for her!

They then poured tea for their elders, received gifts and words of wisdom, and shared a beautiful moment with the family who helped raise them. It's such an important piece of culture, to provide this drink to them. This is usually where the waterworks happen, because your parents have raised you up to be such an incredible human being, and now you kneel before them, repaying them the best you can! It's my favorite thing. And then we had a delicious lunch at a local Chinese restaurant to celebrate!
